The gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, Wanaka, offers more than 460 miles of trails. Locals regularly walk along the Mount Iron Track, a 547-foot climb that rewards efforts with 360-degree views of the metropolis and Lake Wanaka. Most tourists make a beeline to the Instagram-well-known Roy’s Peak Track; however, the Rob Roy Glacier Track and the Diamond Lake trail characterize identical eye-popping views with fewer crowds. Pro tip: The location’s splendor and the proximity of the barren region to the city can lull first-timers into a false safety experience, so forestall using the Mount Aspiring National Park Visitor Centre in Wanaka to get the lay of the land. Local companies can arrange guided hikes.
On the water
Lake Wanaka is a 28-mile-long ribbon of indigo plunging 1,020 ft deep. Its temperatures run cool. However, that doesn’t deter locals from cruising, waterskiing, fishing, and boating. Hands down, the pleasant manner to see Wanaka is from excessive up. With an airport a few miles from town (currently for small aircraft most effective; no commercial flights), it’s smooth to e-book a trip on a helicopter, Cessna, or Forties open cockpit Tiger Moth for a scenic flight, heli-hike, heli-motorbike, or heli-ski. During wintry weather (June through September), skiers take to the powder at nearby websites and Cardrona and Treble Cone for downhill and Snow Farm for pass-country.
